Chartering Checklist

Information on this page was taken from an article in Salt Water Sportsman February 98 issue

Use this questionnaire to help ensure your next charter trip goes smoothly.

DO...

Send the deposit as soon as you book your trip.

Bring your own sunscreen, sickness remedies, coolers, hand towels and extra clothing.

Find out ahead of time how the catch will be divided among the anglers. Some boats divide the catch equally, no matter who caught what.

Help out the deckhand/mate.  A happy deckhand will enable everyone to have more fun.

Treat the boat like your own home.

Write the captain a brief thank-you note after the trip.   you'd be surprised at how many of them appreciate this little nicety.

DON'T...

Wear shoes with hard or black soles, which may leave scuff marks on the deck.  Sneakers and deck shoes are okay.

Throw thrash, cigarette butts or bait on the deck.

Allow children to pull open drawers and cabinets or fiddle with tackle and equipment.

Tell the captain or crew how to fish.

Get upset when the captain moves off a spot where you're catching fish.  This is often done to keep a certain wreck or reef from being overfished.

Wait until the last minute to book a trip.  Plan on booking six months to a year in advance for weekend trips; week-day charters can often be booked two to three months in advance.

Expect to stock your freezer on a one-day trip.

Demand to catch a certain size fish or a certain number of fish.  Fishing is fishing, and there are no guarantees.

Expect to pay less if you come home empty-handed, unless this has been negotiated before the trip.

Expect an eight-hour trip to mean eight hours of fishing.   The stated length of the charter includes running time to and from the fishing grounds.

Call the captain the night before a trip to ask how the fishing's been.  One day may be very different from the next.

Expect the captain to let you sleep on the boat the night before a trip.

Forget to include the name of the boat and the date of your scheduled trip when you send in a deposit check.

Expect to continue catching fish after you've filled your limit.
